The Next Thing

The Next Big Thing Interview Project,

Poet Todd McCarty tagged me to be a part of The Next Big Thing, a series of self-interviews where writers answer questions about their recent or forthcoming projects, books, chapbooks and other whatnots.

What is the working title of the book?

naming ceremony

Where did the idea come from for the book?

Like many poetry manuscripts, it began as my MFA thesis. And like many MFA theses, post MFA, very few poems survived. They were murdered. However, the central themes do remain. The manuscript is a chronicle of my obsessions:

the body, death, loneliness as power, guilt and responsibility as amoral objects, domesticity, and locating that singular point were various types of intimacies intersect and then blurring (even exploiting) those lines.

The story pretty much goes like this: one day, I was born and so I figured I'd write some poems about what's happened since.

What genre does your book fall under?

Poetry.

What actors would you choose to play the part of your characters

     in a movie rendition?

Minus the character of Paula, they'd all have to play themselves, because isn't that cruel?

Paula, however, would have to be played by a different actress every scene.

What is the one sentence synopsis of your book?

So what if we devour each other..

How long did it take you to write the first draft of the manuscript?

Just shy of forever.

Who or what inspired you to write this book?

All the people I love and all the people I've never had the courage to hate. And also, Susan Sontag.

What else about your book might pique the reader’s interest?

Just the right amount of 90s references. And also, stuff about sex.
